Ride from Reno - Day Two - Eureka!

Wearing the Flying Tigers teeth in honor of my friends serving our country
Larry leads the wagon train out of Cold Springs Pony Express Station
Early morning drive to Cold Springs, NV to pickup where we left off yesterday. One of the highlights of the day was a spirited climb up New Pass Summit after working really hard to catch the leaders. Nipped at the line by Larry but I learned some lessons that I hope to use on my five chances tomorrow.
Nipped again at the summit by Larry - five summits tomorrow - five chances to win
Lunch was in Austin, imagine stopping for lunch halfway up a steep grade - suffering to get there then suffering to finish the climb after eating lunch. My lunch was sparse, others ate greasy burgers and milkshakes - that would not work for me...

Fruit of our labor - the fast downhill after a climb out of Austin, NV
Highway construction is usually an unpleasant experience on the road - for us it was bliss. We rode on a newly paved road with no traffic, on a slight downhill with a tail wind - perfection. After the construction site I added my aero bars and solid wheel to practice the time trial position on the final 32 miles to town (we had already ridden 88 miles). Holly bolstered my spirits when I started to flag - she pushed me to complete the ride with a 28 mph average. Not bad but the tail wind certainly helped me make it to Eureka, NV before my engine room powered down.

I will upload the Go Pro video that Holly took of my time trialing at a later date - our internet connection is super slow.

Tomorrow - five big summit climbs before a 10 mile descent that concludes the day. Last year I covered those ten miles with a 50 mph average - and barely pedaled - cannot wait!

Holly is doing a great job supporting the riders, taking pictures and protecting us from the 18 wheelers who like to pass too close. Wouldn't and couldn't do this ride without her.

Our best,

Steve and Holly
